This quarter, Prevent Child Abuse Florida was very busy working on a variety of projects across the state. Most recently, we partnered with the Children’s Services Council of Broward County to produce two water-safety public service announcements. Check out our Facebook page to be one of the first to view the completed video! Both PSAs will become part of our year-round child abuse prevention campaign. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages birth to five in Florida. We believe this water-safety public awareness campaign will help save the lives of our youngest Floridians and visitors.
PCA Florida also attended the Felitti Think Tank held in Southwest Florida. The discussion focused on how the current system of care addresses Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and what can be done to help build protective factors throughout communities that benefit children and families. Dr. Felitti, one of the original developers of the ACEs study, contributed his expertise on educating the healthcare system to recognize and support children and families dealing with the long term affects of ACEs.
Suffocation and strangulation in an adult bed is the leading cause of injury-related death for Florida infants under age 1. The risk of sleeping-related infant death is 40 times higher for babies who sleep in adult beds compared to babies who sleep in their own cribs. Governor Rick Scott has recognized October as Safe Sleep Awareness Month. We invite all our partners to help educate parents about safe sleep by using our new safe sleep social media toolkit. The toolkit contains images and text ready to use on your own social media networks. Download the toolkit at PreventChildAbuseFL.org.
